Guido Casaretto’nun “Başıboşlar, Gergedanlar ve Yanlış Anlamalar Hakkında” Adlı Kişisel Sergisi 10 Mayıs’ta YUNT’ta Açılıyor

Guido Casaretto’nun “Başıboşlar, Gergedanlar ve Yanlış Anlamalar Hakkında” başlıklı kişisel sergisi, 10 Mayıs – 15 Ağustos 2025 tarihleri arasında YUNT’ta ziyaret edilebilir. Sergi, ziyaretçileri Casaretto’nun mekâna yerleştirdiği heykel kalıplarını kullanarak üreteceği bir çift at heykelinin yaratım sürecine tanıklık etmeye davet ediyor.

Osmanlı döneminde Venedik ile İstanbul arasında yapılan ticari ilişkilere dair bir dizi araştırmaya rastlaması, Guido Casaretto’yu Osmanlı sultanının Venedik doçesinden hediye olarak tek boynuzlu at talep ettiği olağandışı bir diyaloğun ayrıntılarıyla buluşturur.* Bu karşılaşmanın ardından tek boynuzlu at imgesinin yarattığı zengin çağrışımların izini süren Casaretto, 19. yüzyılda İtalya’dan Türkiye’ye getirilmiş bronz döküm kalıplarının bir kopyasını YUNT’un sergi mekânına taşır. YUNT’un çevresinden topladığı atık malzemeleri at heykellerinin üretiminde kullanmak üzere biriktiren sanatçı, sergi süresine yayılan döküm sürecini izleyicilerin katılımına açarak, bir aradalığın olanaklarını araştıran toplumsal bir zemin oluşturuyor.

Sanat tarihçisi Agata Polizzi, YUNT’taki sergiye dair kaleme aldığı metinde, Casaretto’nun Doğu ile Batı arasındaki göçlerin bıraktığı izlere duyduğu ilgiyi sanatçının kökleriyle ilişkilendiriyor; sergiyi ise sanatçının belleğinden süzülen bir “duygusal arkeoloji” olarak tanımlıyor. Böylece Casaretto’nun kendi geçmişine yaptığı yolculuk, Akdeniz halklarının ortak hafızasıyla kesişirken; sergi, kişisel ve kolektif anlatıları yeniden düşünmeye alan açıyor.

Antik dönemlerden günümüze uzanan atlı heykel geleneği, Casaretto’nun tekrar, kopyalama ve çoğaltmaya yönelik jestleriyle sergide yeniden yorumlanıyor. Sanat tarihçisi ve eleştirmen Prof. Dr. Esra Aliçavuşoğlu’nun sergi metninde ifade ettiği gibi, sanatçı “binicisiz, imparatorsuz ve anti-kahraman bir at heykeliyle, yalnızca bilgiyi sahiplenmeyi değil, mekânın belleğini, izi sürülen formu ve kültürel aktarımları da odağına almaktadır.” Böylece “idealize edilmiş olanın ve zafer ikonografisinin bu baskın temsili, üzerine yüklenen anlamlardan sıyrılarak mekânın tarihsel belleğinin sınırlarında yavaşça silikleşir.”

Guido Casaretto’s solo exhibition, Of Strays, Rhinos, and Misunderstandings, will be on display at YUNT from 10 May to 15 August 2025. The exhibition invites visitors to witness the creation process of a pair of horse sculptures, which Casaretto will produce using sculptural moulds installed within the space.

Guido Casaretto’s encounter with a series of studies on trade relations between Venice and Istanbul during the Ottoman period led him to the intriguing details of an unusual dialogue in which the Ottoman sultan requested a unicorn as a gift from the Doge of Venice. Following this discovery, Casaretto traces the rich associations evoked by the image of the unicorn and brings a replica of nineteenth century bronze casting moulds, originally brought from Italy to Turkey, into the exhibition space at YUNT. The artist collects discarded materials from the surroundings of YUNT to use in the production of the horse sculptures, creating a social setting that explores the possibilities of togetherness by opening the casting process, which unfolds over the duration of the exhibition, to audience participation.

In her text on the exhibition at YUNT, art historian Agata Polizzi connects Casaretto’s interest in the traces left by migrations between East and West to the artist’s own roots. She describes the exhibition as an “emotional archaeology” filtered through the artist’s memory. In this way, Casaretto’s journey into his own past intersects with the shared memory of Mediterranean peoples, and the exhibition opens up a space for rethinking both personal and collective narratives.

The tradition of equestrian sculpture dating back to ancient times is reinterpreted in the exhibition through Casaretto‘s gestures of repetition, copying and multiplication. As art historian and critic Prof. Esra Aliçavuşoğlu states in the exhibition text, “with a riderless, emperor-less, and anti-heroic horse sculpture, the artist focuses not only on appropriating knowledge but also on the memory of space, the traced form, and cultural transmissions.” Thus, “the dominant representation of the idealised, along with the iconography of victory, gradually dissolves at the edges of the space’s historical memory, stripped of the meanings once ascribed to it.”
